ANIMAL-FREE CHEMICAL AND CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY ASSESSMENT
Driving animal-free innovation in the chemicals and consumer products sector
Despite a strong scientific foundation, the regulatory adoption of new approach methods (NAMs) — such as in chemico and in vitro assays, and in silico models for hazard and risk assessment of chemicals and consumer products — still faces significant barriers.
The AFSA Collaboration works to address these barriers by positioning NAMs as the primary paradigm in chemical and consumer product safety assessment through legal, regulatory and scientific means and by providing scientific support to address urgent regulatory needs.
Over the last decade we spearheaded the global move away from animal testing for cosmetics – championing legal reforms and developed a first of its kind master class in animal-free safety assessment to build awareness and confidence in new scientific approaches to consumer protection. Learn more about our achievements in animal-free safety assessment of cosmetics here.
We are advocating for international changes to laws and regulations to ensure NAMs become the primary method of achieving regulatory compliance by 2035. By leveraging educational resources and scientific evidence to support long-term acceptance and use of NAMs within Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA), Defined Approaches (DA), and Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) frameworks, we’re helping position NAMs as the primary paradigm in chemical and consumer product safety assessment.
