Description: According to the latest EU statistics, more than one million animals are still used annually for regulatory purposes, including the safety assessment of industrial chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
The European Union is currently at a critical moment of change. Several ongoing policy and regulatory developments have the potential to significantly influence the future use of animals in regulatory testing; either accelerating progress toward replacement or creating new challenges.
On the positive side, the recent adoption of the European Commission’s roadmap to phase out animal testing marks an important milestone, together with related initiatives, such as the establishment of the Collaborative Platform on Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (CPAAT) at the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).
At the same time, uncertainties remain. The postponement of the REACH revision and the ongoing discussions around updates to the REACH Annexes could have major implications for future information requirements. These developments may either increase testing demands or, alternatively, strengthen the use of non-animal methods through broader application of Annex XI adaptations and existing flexibility provisions.
In this evolving regulatory landscape, AFSA Collaboration’s scientific projects have the potential to directly influence the direction of regulatory science in Europe. By developing practical implementation tools, supporting compliance with the “last resort” requirement for animal testing, and providing evidence-based recommendations, these projects aim to facilitate a transition toward more scientifically relevant and human-relevant assessment strategies. They also support a move away from a checklist-driven testing culture toward fuller use of existing adaptations and modern, fit-for-purpose approaches.
In this webinar, we will explore the current European regulatory landscape, discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead, and present how these projects can help drive meaningful progress toward reducing and ultimately replacing animal testing while maintaining high standards of safety assessment.
